What happens when you are exposed to long-term stress?

Today we activate this primary instinct although we don’t face a life threatening situation and although we can neither run nor fight. Instead we face modern day saber-tooth tiger – for example our demanding boss – raging in a meeting and all we have to do (against our nature) is to “control ourselves” and to “deal with it”. This kind of unresolved emotional conflicts and suppressed negative emotions cause severe levels of stress. As a result, our body’s natural “fight or flight” response may be stuck in a continuous on position. If you don’t learn to turn it off , stress can have serious consequences for your health.

The longer the ongoing stress lasts, the worse it turns out to be for your body and mind. Following symptoms can occur:

○ Decreasing energy levels and constant feeling of fatigue
○ Unable to concentrate
○ Easily irritable for no good reason
○ Headache or migraine
○ IBS
○ Chronic cold or inflammation
○ Insomnia
○ High blood pressure

According to APA’s 2012 Stress in America survey, stress keeps more than 40 percent of adults lying awake at night, what even increases the symptoms during daytime as the body has no time to recover. According to a study conducted by the Oregon State University, individuals who tend to live a more stressful life have a 50% higher chance of dying. Stress may also cause sequelae from overeating, extensive smoking, alcohol abuse or other harmful habits people develop to cope with stress. When it becomes as severe as stress starts interfering with your ability to live a normal life for an extended period, stress itself can become life threatening, as the number of raising people affected by burnout or the alarming numbers of Karoshi victims demonstrate.

What is the ‘fight or flight’ response?

From an evolutionary perspective our inherent “fight or flight” response was extremely valuable for the survival of the human being. When we had to run from our perceived threat, a sequence of firing nerve cells and chemical release prepared our bodies for either running or fighting. These patterns caused our body to undergo a series of considerable changes:

○ Increased stress hormone levels
○ Accelerated heartbeat & increased respiratory rate
○ Increased muscle tension
○ Deteriorated digestion
○ Intensified awareness
○ Shut down of the immune system

Do It Yourself – How can I reduce stress on my own?

The American Psychological Association recommends:

○ Identify what’s causing stress
○ Build strong relationships
○ Walk away when you are angry
○ Rest your mind
○ Get help
