Our Body’s Chemical Messengers
“Hormones work together like an ensemble in an orchestra. If each essential part works properly, then the result will be a beautiful and harmonious symphony. But even if one single part of the orchestra plays out of tune the whole melody will be out of balance.
Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. Each of them has its own responsibility for fulfilling specific functions. Hormones are secreted from the endocrine glands in the body and travel in your bloodstream to organs and tissues. As they are very powerful, too much or too little of a certain hormone can cause big changes in your whole body.
- What are hormones responsible for?
○ Maintenance of body temperature and thirst
○ Growth and development
○ Metabolism – how your body gets energy from
○ The foods you eat
○ Sexual function and drive
○ Reproduction
○ Cognitive function and mood
Functional Medicine & Holistic Nutrition
Functional medicine is about getting to the root cause of a disease or dysfunction, by identifying the triggers, imbalances, pathogenic influences and toxicities. It combines the consultative expertise together with the appropriate diagnostic procedures, like laboratory tests, to help the patient regain balance, wellness and vitality. Diet, detoxication and supplementation are the key tools to correct any imbalance.
How does a consultation at Balance Health look like?
The treatment with our functional medicine practitioner and holistic
nutritionist Miles Price is built up in three evaluation steps:
1. Conducting a thorough health, family history, lifestyle
and diet evaluation
2. Evaluating blood tests and laboratory results
3. Prescribing specific dietary modifications, with supplemental detoxification
support if needed
The benefits of this holistic approach combined with clinical support result in more energy, vitality, and elimination of symptoms.
Homeopathy dates back about 200 years ago when it was first invented
in Germany. It is a system of traditional medicine which addresses the whole
person: the physical, the mental and the emotional. It treats each patient
individually with highly diluted natural substances with the aim of triggering
the body’s natural self-healing abilities. Homeopathy not only restores the
balance of your prevailing health condition, but also heals the underlying
mental or emotional toll you might be suffering from.
A double-blinded, placebo-controlled study from the University of Glasgow, Europe’s largest medical school, showed that over 80 percent of the 24 asthma patients improved significantly after they were given homeopathic remedies.

What causes Hormonal Imbalance ?
Your body needs certain building blocks, made up of good fats and cholesterol,
for the production of hormones. A lack of these important dietary factors can
trigger hormonal imbalances, simply because the body doesn’t have enough of the
right components to produce them. Many of us are unaware that the diet we eat
can highly impact the effectiveness of our hormones. Some foods or chemicals
even damage or mimic our hormones causing us to be lacking or to be dominant in
certain hormones which causes imbalance. Furthermore, our increasing exposure
to stress, worsening nutrition, lack of proper sleep and physical exercise
result in declining levels of well functioning hormones in our bodies. Except
of lifestyle factors there are other causes which can throw off our body’s
natural chemistry like menopause, pregnancy, menstrual cycle or the
contraceptive pill.
How can you treat Hormonal Imbalances?
During the past years hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has become a highly
debated topic. Hormone deficiency is usually treated with synthetics and is highly
effective in relieving some of the mentioned symptoms. But a major study in
2002 by the Women’s Health
Initiative proved that the risks of HRT exceed the benefits for
certain groups of women. Consequently, women are increasingly looking for
natural alternatives.
